It is no longer global warming because it isn't.

It is climate change because it does.

Men are never so likely to settle a question rightly as when they discuss it freely.

— Thomas B. Macaulay (1800-1859), Essay on Southey's Colloquies

All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

Dirty Weather Reporter

What time is it kids? It's Howdy Doody time!

Gorebull warming is back for another snoreathon on Nov. 14-15.

"Al Gore hopes to show links between climate change and the effects of extreme weather worldwide with an online and social media-fueled event built around the idea of “dirty weather.”"

Good luck with that!

As a recent study shows CAGW is not happening. That which is not happening cannot cause anything let alone extreme weather.

Let us help out the Goreacle with some recent research on the subject of extreme weather that this author is certain you will not experience should you tune in to his hyperbolic hysteria.

Gore: “We face a global crisis of unprecedented proportions." Gee, all we need is the prediction of planetary doom and he will sound just like Harold Camping. Oh, look, here comes one now. It is not from Gore but his agreement is easy to imagine. The words of John Christy in his recent testimony before the US Congress sound more reasonable and rooted in reality than the alarmist rhetoric of self-interested snake oil salesmen like Al Gore.

From Climate Depot

According to Gore: 'Now we find ourselves living in what scientists call a 'new normal' of more extreme weather that's happening all over the world with increasing frequency'.

Do the facts support this view of reality or is this mindless fear-mongering?

From Roger Pielke Jr:

Drought and Climate Change - Anyone who shows up in public debate (or the scientific literature) with an alternative view (e.g., droughts have become worse in the US or there is more certainty at the global level) had better come with some strong evidence.

From Watts Up With That?:

Al Gore’s ‘dirty weather’ timing is impeccable – NOAA just released data showing 2012 tornado count dropping like a house in Oz - contrary to MSM reports

Meteorologist Dr. Ryan Maue has released the latest hurricane frequency data updated through September 2012 showing a continuation of depressed global major hurricane numbers.

Here is a collection of papers on extreme weather that does not support the MSM view championed by Al Gore.

To see the hype that is Al Gore we can remind ourselves of yet another tame hurricane season in the US and Caribbean in 2012. The US has not been hit by a major hurricane in 7 years the longest period of absence in the record. Florida has still not been hit by any hurricane during that same period. This does not sound like Gore's alarmist 'increasing frequency'. Will this be mentioned on the Goreathon?

Severe floods have eluded a rise in occurrence. Are people who sell hip waders disappointed?

Forest fires have also been on the decrease with 2012 to date (Sept) having the fewest on record.

Smokey the Bear is grateful. Smokey th...

Extreme weather is not getting worse it is getting rarer. Perhaps that is due to the increasing amount of CO2 in our atmosphere.  People love to demonize CO2. It seems that their venom is misguided. Do we owe CO2 an apology?

This is an interesting paper that shows how natural variability controls the North Atlantic climate. Progress in the understanding of our planet's climate change proceeds unabated by the political boondoggles favored by certain misinformed gentlemen.

It might be time to revisit Al's hypocritical hyping of climate hysteria when he downsizes his own lifestyle without relying on the purchase of carbon credits from his own firm to claim compliance.

Carbon credits were invented by the rich to allow them to relieve their guilt without affecting their lavish lifestyles. They continue to live the Life of Riley while the rest of us are expected to live like Dagwood Bumstead and like hard working Dagwood we have been scammed.

Dagwood abandons the ranks of this nation's hardcrabble working class and rejoins the elite

The studies cited above put the lie to the idea that weather is becoming more extreme. It renders moot the belief that the debate is over, the science is settled and that there is a consensus among scientists. The conventional wisdom purveyed by the MSM is not wise and is in direct contradiction to the information that reality is presenting to us. And isn't reality the final arbiter of truth? The weather isn't getting weirder.

Some blogger comments are fun to read.

Can a misanthropic misinformed miscreant like Al Gore be charged with crimes against humanity?

CO2 has been exhaled during the creation of this post. No living thing was harmed. Some even liked it.

The Goreacle

Over at The Goreacle we have another opinion about what Superstorm Sandy means for the future. Not surprisingly Al is warning us to convert to alternative energy ASAP or face dire consequences. But then Al is known for his alarmism. It has made him rich.

Scientists tell us that by continually dumping 90 million tons of global warming pollution into the atmosphere every single day, we are altering the environment in which all storms develop.

No they don’t. They tell us that CO2 has little to no effect on climate. Scientists tell us that low atmospheric CO2 content could be deadly for life. They tell us that CO2 is unrelated to extreme weather events. You won’t hear The Goreacle quoting that study on his Nov 14-15 snoreathon.

As the oceans and atmosphere continue to warm, storms are becoming more energetic and powerful.

No they are not. Severe storms are not increasing. Accumulated Cyclone Energy is below normal for this year.

Other climate-related catastrophes around the world have carried the same message to hundreds of millions.

Not snowstorms or tornadoes or windstorms or hurricanes

What is he talking about? Is he ignorant or deliberately lying? Is he living on the same planet?

As the hurricane approached the East Coast, it gathered strength from abnormally warm coastal waters.

No it didn’t. It went from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical cyclone. Read the accounts, Al. Can he get anything right? Apparently not. Look at this.

At the same time, Sandy's storm surge was worsened by a century of sea level rise.

The surge was worsened by the high tides at the full moon. Both natural phenomenon last time I was in school. Isn’t the East coast still sinking after the last ice age in isostatic rebound?

Scientists tell us that if we do not reduce our emissions, these problems will only grow worse.

So Al, to what level should we reduce our emissions of CO2?

According to Roger Pielke, Jr.: In historical context, Sandy sits alongside Carol, Diane and Hazel. One big difference however -- Carol, Diane and Hazel hit the US Atlantic coast within a single 13 month period in 1954-1955. Imagine that.

Al seems to think we need to leave the oil, gas and coal in the ground so we don’t burn it and add CO2 to the atmosphere. Is the presumption that this will improve the climate?

Shall we reduce our CO2 levels to that of 1954-55? Would that be far enough into the past?

Should we go back to the levels of CO2 that were present in 1938 when the Long Island Express hurricane rolled through NYC? Lots of fires that year too(185,000). A lot fewer fires in 2012 so far.

Maybe we should reduce our CO2 concentrations to the levels present in 1900 when Galveston was flattened by a devastating hurricane. Lots of forest fires that year too.

Not back far enough? How about 1886 when the US was hit by 7 hurricanes - 2 of them of the major variety? CO2 levels were a lot lower back then. Oil refining was in its infancy.

Tell me again, Al. What year and level of CO2 did you have in mind when the weather was to your liking?

Al ends with this warning.

Hurricane Sandy is a disturbing sign of things to come. We must heed this warning and act quickly to solve the climate crisis. Dirty energy makes dirty weather.

Nonsense. There is no crisis except in Al’s deluded mind. See links above.

Late breaking: more nonsense from Al on the Jennifer Granholm show. Now Al is claiming that hot temperatures "are now 100 times more common than they were just thirty years ago". Did he make that up? Even with all the record hot temperatures experienced in the US in the summer of 2012 no state highs were set. If temperatures are increasing so much how come the State highs are not being broken 100 times more frequently?

Hot air rises, Al. Try as you might even you can’t overheat the planet.

Sandy may have been a Frankenstorm but as usual Al is talking Frankenpoop.

Past weather Extremes

Weather extremes of the past were worse than those of today. The IPCC in their recent SREX report on weather extremes doesn't mention the past or a decrease in death rates from extreme weather events but it does note that there is not a confirmed attribution of extreme weather to climate change.

“Long-term trends in economic disaster losses adjusted for wealth and population increases have not been attributed to climate change, but a role for climate change has not been excluded (medium evidence, high agreement).”

Take a look at the report from Dennis Avery who informs us about 300 year droughts and sea-floods from our past. Chris Scotese has a nice web site detailing the paleoclimate by geologic period. Take a trip back in time.

And then there is James Marusek. (pdf) This work documents weather related events from 1AD to 1900AD in 802 pages.

Here is a 2011 paper that finds that extreme weather was as prevalent in the MWP and LIA as it is now.

When CO2 was 327.18 ppm (backup here) this is how it was around the world in 1971. In 2012 CO2 is 394.45ppm.  Severe weather happens at different concentrations of CO2.

Just because we weren't there or haven't got the best memory doesn't mean that past weather extremes did not take place. Humans invented record keeping to provide a species wide memory. And now it is digitized and made available via the internet to anyone with a computer.
