Grasping at Single Instances

Those who are pushing the Global Warming hysteria love to jump on each instance of weather bad enough to grab the attention of the media and blame it on human CO2 emissions. If there are several instances of bad weather happening concurrently, as there often are, the hysteria can be magnified in the brains of the pushers.

‘Climate change is real and happening now’ they declare. We must reduce our CO2 emissions now to save our planet.

But, when hasn’t the world been in such a state. Alarmists seem to think that any deviation from cloudless skies is our fault. But when has the world’s weather ever been all fluffy white clouds and gentle summer rain. Our generation has satellites and cameras everywhere able to detect the slightest perturbation in the atmosphere. Our modern communications make that knowledge instantly available to all who are interested. And yet when we consider the nature of the atmosphere in which we reside why should these simultaneous events surprise us.

Once upon a time back in 2001 the IPCC were aware of the truth.

” … In climate research and modelling, we should recognise that we are dealing

with a coupled non-linear chaotic system, and therefore that the

long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible.”

If a storm entering the Arctic brings warm air to raise temperatures to readings not normally seen for the time of year should we be surprised to read about snow in the summer in Peru. Snow in El Paso, Texas and no snow in Buffalo, N.Y. in December may seem odd or wacky but isn’t wacky the ‘norm’ in a coupled, chaotic non-linear atmosphere. Hot here, cold there; heat distribution not so rare. At any point in time there is only so much energy in the atmosphere. If it is warmer than normal in one place then according to the law of conservation of energy that must be balanced with colder than normal someplace else. Apparently, the Arctic has experienced real warmth in the past when CO2 was lower.

A cursory glance at the weather history that we have accumulated ought to convince anyone that the storms of our grandfathers were every bit a disaster for them as modern ones are for us. A cursory glance through the scientific literature which examines the frequency and intensity of extreme weather ought to confirm the opinion of the IPCC in AR5. Blizzards in the lower CO2 past were just as white as blizzards in higher CO2 modern times. Extreme weather cares not for the concentration of CO2 in the air. In fact, a case could be made that higher CO2 leads to moderation in extreme weather but you can’t sell fear of climate change by pointing out that fact so it is ignored by the global warming pushers. The totalitarians among us need a planet in peril in order to motivate us to accept the top down rule of their elitist credo.

Totalitarians are control freaks who are deathly afraid that somewhere, someone is doing something without their consent and by God they are going to put a stop to it. You exhale CO2 and that makes you a rootin’ tootin’ pollutin’ machine and therefore you need to be controlled.

Most Repeated Warmist Canards

Warmists believe in man made global warming because 97%, science and the warmest year in recorded history, or something.

The world has millions of scientists. When challenged to produce the polls and the questions asked in those polls to corroborate their 97% assertion there will be none that support the CO2 centric meme of AGW. Although there are some that have been done of subsets of the scientific population that indicate the 97% figure is a myth.

When it is pointed out to warmists that history goes back further into the past than the 21st century and that scientists tell us that there were periods in the planet’s evolution that were warmer than we currently experience what would be the alarmist response? After all, it is they who contend that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere over the previous 800,000 years of pre-industrial terrestrial existence remained constant. So if CO2 is the main driver of climate change how could the world be warmer in the past than it is now? Or cooler?

The conclusion has to be that there are other natural factors at work that drive climate change. What climatologists DO NOT KNOW is how to apportion responsibility for climate change among the various possible drivers such as volcanic activity, cloudiness, humidity, ocean currents, land use change, UHI, orbital irregularities and solar variability to name a few. If we do not know the extent of the role that each plays in the climate drama then how can we attribute modern warming to but one overriding factor? Methinks that we owe CO2 an apology.

The Global Climate Models that climatologists depend on give the starring role to CO2. These GCMs make predictions about the future based on assumptions about how the inputs to the models will change over time and how they interact in the real world. We test these models by observing how well they do against real world observations. So what predictions do the CO2 centric models make?

1. The Global Mean Temperature will go up in response to a rise in CO2
2. Humidity will rise
3. There will be a hot spot in the tropical troposphere as CO2 rises
4. Extreme weather will become more frequent and severe
5. Ice caps will melt
6. Sea level rise will accelerate

These are six we can look at and we will see that as CO2 rises Gaia surprises by invalidating all six. There are recent references provided in the links above for all six predictions that report on their progress.

We are going to look only at the first one since an increasing temperature is the most obvious one to expect if the CO2 centric heat trapping theory is true. Have you all heard that 2014 was the hottest year in recorded history until 2015 came along?

If the media tell you that 14 of the hottest recorded years occurred in the 21st century would that concern you?

If you were told 6000-8000 years ago in a time scientists identify as the Holocene Climate Optimum (HCO) it was warmer than now would that ease your mind?

CO2 was at pre-industrial levels 6000-8000 years ago so how did it get so warm?

Do we know?

So, in the HCO, we must conclude that the world warmed WITHOUT the assistance of CO2 levels like our own.

There were other periods warmer than now within the last 10,000 years most notably the Minoan, Roman and Medieval Warm Periods. This is clearly shown in the Greenland ice core data displayed below.

As our world warms from the Little Ice Age receding glaciers do us a favor and remind us of warmer times as their recession has a habit of exposing old tree stumps and mummies from times gone by. The age of these artifacts teach us that it must have been warmer than now in their time of life when CO2 was far below current levels. What does that mean? It helps us to understand that CO2 concentration carries no weight in determining the global mean temperature. CO2, far from having the lead role attributed to it in the modern climate drama, is a bit player or perhaps does not belong in the cast at all. Lower CO2 is NOT a guarantee of better weather as a cursory glance into weather history will attest.

The last interglacial, known as the Eemian , was also several degrees warmer than now as were others before it.

The following graph lays out what scientists have discovered about temperatures and CO2 levels in more distant geological eras. Do you see any relationship?

If what geologists are telling us is true then our planet has experienced ice ages when CO2 was high and warm periods when CO2 decreased. This eliminates CO2 as a causative factor in our climate drama.

Our climate changes continuously. No one denies this. We do not fully understand how the various climate drivers interact to produce our climatic experience. But we CAN eliminate CO2, from whatever origin, as a primary driving factor in the climate change of the earth.

Just because the rooster crows before the sun comes up does not mean it is the cause of the dawn. Just because it is warming while CO2 is rising is not proof of cause.

There is no justification for the 97% figure anymore than there is scientific evidence for CO2 as cause of the late 20th century warming. It has been warmer before the transformative industrial revolution started by modern humans. And that is what science has to teach us.

We owe CO2 an apology.

With all the bad press that CO2 has received over the years humans tend to forget that CO2 is a trace gas essential to life on Earth. Plants can’t live without it and they are doing a wonderful job.

Don’t we all accept less critically those observations and inferences that support our world view than those that don’t?

CO2 is more plentiful in the atmosphere now than in the recent past. Apparently, Bette does not know that over the last 600 million years CO2 has been at concentrations 10 to 20 times our current levels. No tipping point, no runaway global warming. And that bit of science ought to be the end of the ‘CO2 drives warming’ assault on fossil fuels.

People not trained in critical thinking will see what they want to see and take it as confirmation of their beliefs. No questions asked. No further investigation needed. This trait explains why Bette is a performer and not a scientist.

Bette makes this mistake constantly. She sees a single instance(many of them) which supports her view that the world has a fever but forgets to ask if the world had a similar fever in the past which would be more difficult to blame on a lower CO2 concentration.

Hence, Bette does not think to look back in weather history to see if there were instances of as high or higher temperatures on the December 22nds of the past. There were. Thus this year’s instance is but another example of weather completely within the bounds of natural variability.

Yup, last time it was the presence of too much snow which convinced her of climate change. She forgot that CO2 is supposed to be a heat trapping gas thus making the climate WARMER which should result in more rain and less snow. Thus Bette believes in a theory that cannot be falsified because every extreme event can now be blamed on CO2. Hot or cold CO2 did it!

The focus must be kept on the alleged catastrophic heat trapping superpowers of CO2. This is the crux of the whole issue. It is NOT about any climate change but about a WARMING climate. A WARMING climate portends expected consequences. If those consequences refuse to show up or show up in metrics lower than those predicted as CO2 rises then the theory has a problem.

The data coming from the Mother Nature Climate Network do NOT support the predictions made by the CO2 centric climate models.

But those pursuing an agenda will ignore, belittle or hide behind the ‘ mythical consensus’ when data exposing the error in their beliefs bubble to the surface of public discourse. Isolation and insulation from alternative views makes an island of groupthink.

If you don’t seek out those with different views you will continue to repeat the same mistakes.

In the case of unusual weather conditions the first question that should be asked is: has it happened before? If it has then it is within the bounds of natural variability and should not be regarded as unprecedented. Another question that could be asked is: is there a trend toward these unusual conditions? Are they happening more frequently?

We must go where the data leads and according to the links above increasing CO2 is not proceeding to a dangerously warmer world. Seeing is believing. But Bette, there are those who will remain wilfully blind.

Higher CO2. Better weather. More crop growth. Sounds good to me. Who has a problem with that?

Some people can’t exist outside of anxiety so they manufacture a crisis in their own mind to keep themselves happy. Why do they have to spoil it by visiting their delusions on the rest of us?

Some people see the potential to advance their terrible totalitarian tendencies and latch onto a crisis to milk it for all the power they can accrue.

Some people see a crisis, real or imagined, as a way to enrich themselves while riding the stupidity of others as far as they will let them.

There are a lot of people with no dedication to the truth and it is they who ‘pose the most dire threat to humanity’. Turning reality topsy turvy is their particular skill and they are either too dumb to know it or they are too nefarious to care. They trade in confusion and revel in peppering the media with claims of drastic evils of unimagined horror. People are always looking for the shaman, the one who seems to know the future and the path to salvation. Humans fall for this nonsense time and time again. Our downfall is that we accept less critically observations which support our worldview than those that don’t. There are people smart enough and sociopathic enough to take advantage of the weakness we have to believe what we want to hear. Tell it to us and we are more likely to believe it without further investigation. We can be enticed to believe the most ridiculous things, even complete contradictions like CO2 causes it to be too warm AND too cold. CO2 becomes evil incarnate and responsible for all that we don’t like about the world. Even better if there are people who can be fingered to take the fall for that which we dislike. Now we can focus our ire on our fellow humans and the witch hunt begins.

Once the juggernaut gets on a roll it is hard to stop. The totalitarians among us are schooled well in the art of manufacturing a crisis. It seems the lovers of liberty are always on the defensive, caught by surprise, unorganized and always playing catch up and we are often too late to arrest the assault on our freedoms. The totalitarians somehow manage to seize the moral high ground and attack those who raise objections as evil doers backed by those who stand to benefit economically. Attack always deflects attention from your own goals which often best be covered up to hide their unpalatability to the general public.

The totalitarians leading the charge of CO2 centric climate change theory have done a masterful job in demonizing CO2 and Big Oil. Big Oil in their pathetic attempts to appear GREEN belittle their own existence and add kindling to their own self immolation at the stake.

And yet, the state of the world as indicated by the data above, is better now than it was in the past. Extreme weather is NOT more frequent and more severe. Sea level rise is NOT going to swamp us. That is why the Maldives keep building hotels, resorts and airports. The ice caps are not melting away. Polar bear numbers are 5 times more plentiful now than in the 1950s. Temperatures are NOT rising in a manner that is in any way connected with the human emissions of CO2. In fact that is so true that NOAA/NASA has to cheat in order to give the WH grounds to say that they are the warmest evah.

It is long past the time lovers of liberty got serious about becoming the sand in the gears of the totalitarian advance.

A Warm December in Washington

That should be the end of it. It is weather. Weather is variable. It has been warm in Washington in December before.

“By early afternoon, the temperature had vaulted to 69 degrees at Reagan National Airport, the highest Christmas reading in more than 30 years, and far warmer than the customary high of 44 degrees.”

If warm Decembers have occurred in the past then today’s weather is not unprecedented. It is not a sign of the dreaded ‘global warming’ the global warming pushers keep trying to sell us.

The climate changes continuously and while in the East a warm December has been enjoyed in the West winter has been its normal deadly self.

And then we have this - record cold tied in LA - 36 set in 1916. Evidence of global cooling?

If the warm December in Washington is a sign of global warming then what does the cold in the west signify?

And how does CO2 decide to warm one area and cool another? Is it bipolar?

Or does CO2 concentration have nothing to do with the weather or the climate?

Weather history provides the answer. If bad weather happens at lower levels of CO2 and at higher levels then the concentration of CO2 is irrelevant as a cause. As someone once joked: the difference between a low CO2 blizzard and a high CO2 blizzard is that the snow is white. The conclusion that CO2 is irrelevant is strengthened if the trends in ‘bad weather’ are not increasing as CO2 rises. Indeed, the Mother Nature Climate Network shows no increase in the frequency or severity of extreme weather which is not to downplay the seriousness of the extreme weather that does occur. There are more of us with more stuff to lose so a modern event can be injurious to a lot of people and property. But CO2 is NOT to blame.

We owe CO2 an apology.

And the warm December in Washington has now passed. CO2 couldn’t trap the heat?
