It is no longer global warming because it isn't.

It is climate change because it does.

Men are never so likely to settle a question rightly as when they discuss it freely.

— Thomas B. Macaulay (1800-1859), Essay on Southey's Colloquies

All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

The Apocalypse That Never Comes

It is easy to find those who see the planet in peril. But some are more realistic with respect to our worldly problems.

Only cartoonists make the prediction come true.

The apocalyptics have NEVER been right. It is better to bet against the accuracy of the doomsayers. Think about it. If they are ever right you won’t have to pay up. It is the perfect bet.

Apocalyptics have a fatal flaw. They always see ONLY the events that support their prediction because they are emotionally invested in the conclusion. They ignore the data that doesn’t coincide with their vision. Hence their perfect record of failure. Closing your eyes to the data confines you to the dark limits of your pessimistic imagination - a place of fictional creation untempered by the light of reality. Contrary data that would compel them to alter their opinion and admit error is not permitted in the deluded minds of the imagined omniscient.

Benefits are missed with such a gloomy focus.

Data that contradict their gloomy expectations are shunned. They cling to disaster scenarios and berate the rest of us for our denial.

And the story gets old.

And yet some don’t get the message and retreat into the future.

As the imminent fear fades real data pile on to postpone the apocalypse once again. Was there ever any doubt?

There is a reason that H.L. Mencken observed:

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed — and hence clamorous to be led to safety — by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

CAGW is our modern hobgoblin. The Totalitarians among us want to take advantage of it to increase their control over the masses.

Despite the accumulating data that CO2 is NOT a pollutant trapping infrared radiation to overheat the planet new scares arise to rekindle our need for the impending apocalypse to unite us in an harmonious struggle for our survival. And here is the next one.

And where will they focus: on single use plastic: in rich countries. And where does most plastic in the ocean come from: 10 rivers in Asia and Africa.

Bang the bongos.. We are about to launch our latest campaign to impugn western civilisation. The plastic apocalypse is upon us.

Yawn! That too shall pass.
