What triggers them. Take a trip over to Nova and have a read.
Several errors in this piece. Contrary to the picture caption the Hubbard glacier is an expanding glacier. I was there in August of 2011 on a cruise and from the decks of the cruise ship you could hear the ominous creaking of the glacier as the snow and ice behind it pushed the leading edge further into the bay. While there we were treated to several calvings. Expanding glaciers calve.
There are scientists (usually physicists) who would disagree that without the atmosphere we would be freezing. They point out that the temperature on the surface of the moon in sunlight is 107C. Since the Earth is at the same distance from the sun as the moon if we had no atmosphere the Earth's surface temperature would also be 107C so the atmosphere actually acts to keep us cooler than we otherwise would be. CO2 has little to do with it.
